Mechanical Engineer

At PlanBlue, we’re enabling nation-scale restoration of marine ecosystems with groundbreaking seafloor mapping technology. This is a chance to turn your engineering skills into real-world impact — you’ll take ownership of hardware projects from concept to deployment, tackle diverse challenges, and help shape the future of ocean tech as part of a passionate, mission-driven team.

Full-time · Bremen

PlanBlue is on a mission to harness the critical role of the seafloor in addressing global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and food insecurity. Its cutting-edge technology integrates advanced imaging with AI-driven data processing, delivering automated seafloor intelligence that uncovers the seafloor’s true ecological and economic value at scale and at speed. Over the last seven years, we have built a dynamic, diverse team of engineers, business developers, data scientists, and marine experts, bringing together a mix of skills and expertise necessary to achieve our mission.

What you'll be doing

  • Design of mechanical components and assemblies for products such as the DiveRay, TowRay and AutoRay, and its support hardware.

  • Cable routing and mechanical layout design within constrained hardware environments.

  • Translate system-level requirements into mechanical subsystem designs.

  • Generate production files (3D models, 2D drawings, BOMs) and manage communication with (local) manufacturers and suppliers.

  • Oversee logistics, integration, and (sub)assembly of parts.

  • Provide technical input for design direction across hardware projects.

  • Take designs through the full lifecycle: concept → prototype → test → production.

  • Work on diverse, punctual client projects across different sectors.

  • Balance high-intensity delivery phases with quieter periods used for optimization, maintenance, or internal improvements.

What you will bring

  • Minimum 3 years of relevant experience, ideally in a fast-paced or startup environment.

  • Able to manage and deliver mechanical design work independently.

  • Solid understanding of manufacturing processes.

  • Experience with prototyping, testing.

  • Comfortable shifting between hands-on tasks and high-level design thinking.

  • Thrives in variable work intensity — capable of managing rush deadlines as well as slower optimization periods.

→ Research shows that while men apply to jobs if they meet ~60% of criteria, women and those in traditionally underrepresented groups tend to apply only if they check all the boxes. So, if you think you have what it takes but don't meet every single point above, please still get in touch. We'd love to have a chat and see if you could be a great fit.

→ We value the diversity of our colleagues. People with disabilities are currently underrepresented in our company. We want to change that. For this reason, we are part of the Inklupreneur project and strongly encourage people living with disabilities to apply. We have the facilities and flexibility. We will support you in the working environment.
